Six Best Alternatives to SKYPE

13:00 Posted by kkb No comments

If for whatever reason you no longer want to use Skype, then rest assured in knowing that there are plenty of alternative programs out there. They may not be as polished or prevalent as Skype, but they certainly get the job done. And best of all, every program on this list is absolutely free!

Google

skype alternatives
It’s almost expected that Google would have some sort of competition in the area of VoIP and Internet chatting. But behold–Google actually has three different programs that you can use as alternatives to Skype. It all depends on what you were using Skype for.
If you need a quick and easy way to set up group video conferences, look no further thanGoogle Hangouts. Not only are video chat sessions free, you can add up to 8 other participants for a total of 10. The calls are high quality and intuitively designed.

If you just need a service that lets you call other people over the Internet, then Google Voiceis your solution. Assign yourself a Voice-provided phone number that you can use for everything no matter what your phone or service provider is. Through Google Voice, you can make free calls to anywhere in the U.S. or Canada; everywhere else has extremely low rates.
If it’s instant messaging that you need, use Google Talk. As a bonus, you can use Google Talk to initiate private video chat sessions; all you need to do is install a plugin. Google Talk interfaces with Gchat (on Gmail), iGoogle, and Orkut.

Jitsi

alternatives to skype
Jitsi is a powerful piece of software that specializes in VoIP. Not only can it perform audio calls and video chats, but it can also stream and share desktops over the Internet, record calls, encrypt calls, and instant message. It even has a few neat features like echo cancellation and noise suppression (for those with poor quality mics or noisy rooms).
Jitsi supports a wide number of Internet chatting protocols, including: SIP, XMPP (Jabber, Google Talk, Facebook), MSN, AIM, Yahoo!, ICQ, and Bonjour. Jitsi is available on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

VoxOx

alternatives to skype
With VoxOx, you can easily make audio or video calls to your friends. VoxOx-to-VoxOx calls are entirely free, so if your friends all use VoxOx, then you’ll all benefit. However, VoxOx can still be used to call real telephone numbers and send text messages at cheap rates.
On their overview page, it’s immediately apparent that VoxOx really likes their free features. Here’s what you get for free: personal phone number, voicemail, inbound calls/texts/faxes, conference calls, chat and social features, file sharing, and more. VoxOx is available on Windows and Mac.

goober

alternatives to skype
With goober, you can call your fellow goober buddies through audio or video calling. The VoIP feature is free if you’re calling another goober user, else it will cost low rates depending on the location of the receiver. Video calls are free but can only occur goober-to-goober. Conference calls are all free; audio conferences can hold an unlimited number of participants but video conferences are limited to 6.
From the looks of it, it seems like goober wants to be more of a social networking tool. The built-in instant messenger can communicate with AIM, MSN, ICQ, Jabber, Google Talk, Yahoo! and more. You can link and interact with Facebook and Twitter straight through goober, too. goober is available on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Ekiga

are there any alternatives to skype
Ekiga is an open-source program that specializes in VoIP, video calling, and instant messaging. Right out of the box, it supports high quality audio and high-definition video at DVD quality. The user interface is easy to learn and simple to use. Audio and video calls are free over the Internet; calls to phones will cost low rates.
Ekiga is available for Windows and Linux.

ooVoo

skype alternatives
If you really only use Skype for its video chatting features, then ooVoo may be the replacement for you. Video calls are extremely simple to set up and conferences can hold up to 12 participants. For the times you don’t need video, you can instant message. ooVoo supports calling to phones but you’ll need to purchase ooVoo credits first.
ooVoo has a Premium upgrade available that enables desktop sharing between users in a call and removes advertisements. Yes, ooVoo’s free version is supported by ads. ooVoo is available for Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone, and Facebook.

Conclusion

Skype was once the top dog in the world of free video conferencing and VoIP, but that throne has a lot of contesting kings now. It doesn’t matter where you live or what operating system you use, there is always a Skype alternative available. It’s not like Skype is completely off the table right now, but if it doesn’t please you anymore, these will get the job done.

If you are into photo editing and you don’t want to pay for a program that you’ll never use enough to pay for itself, check out GIMP.  I’ve been using it for some time now and have learned how to do many of the things I need to for web design work (including image maps).  GIMP is free and not all that difficult to learn, as long as you are not afraid of tutorials.

GIMP Guru

If you want a one-stop-shop for learning some typical image enhancing with the GIMP (many of the principles learned here also apply to other programs), GIMP Guru’s tutorial page is the place to check out.  Learn how to do stuff like red-eye removal, converting to black and white plus reducing noise or haze all in this one place.

Grokking the GIMP

This site is actually an HTML version of a book written all about the GIMP.  You can order the actual physical book or you can use the online version for free.  Um, let’s see, spend money?  Or free?  This book is a very thorough look at how to use GIMP so it could be a manual to come back to again and again.

Malgalin’s YouTube Channel

When it comes to tutorials, sometimes video screencasts can really solidify what it is that you are attempting to learn about GIMP photo editing.  What better place to find screencasts than YouTube?  I ran across Malgalin’s channel but a quick search on YouTube in general will come up with all kinds of GIMP tutorials.

GHUJ – GIMP Turoials

I’m not too sure about the name but the site is very cool.  It acts as sort of a GIMP tutorial portal of sorts.  Scroll through the very graphically based front page and find a cool effect you want to learn and click it.  You’ll be brought to a quick description of the tutorial and a link.

Noupe.com’s 30 Exceptional GIMP Tutorials & Resources

Noupe happens to be a site/blog all about different design aspects and software.  They have other tutorials besides just the GIMP.  What I found here was one specific article containing links to some very exceptional GIMP tutorials I think are worth checking out.
Learn how to do some cool effects like neon lights, recoloring eyes, and oil paintings and pencil drawings from photographs.  Oh, and for you Star Wars fans out there, they even listed a tutorial on how to do that cool lightsaber effect.

SlideWall: Rotating Wallpaper With Images From Your Computer Or The Web [Ubuntu-Linux]

12:30 Posted by kkb , No comments

Want rotating wallpaper in Ubuntu, but don’t want to use the default slideshows? Design your   own with SlideWall. This easy-to-use software lets you pick which photos you want to rotate and when, and can even automatically download and rotate high-quality wallpapers from the web.
You can even set your wallpaper to a real-time depiction of where the sun is an isn’t shining on earth, if you want.
Windows and OS X both let you pick a folder of wallpapers to rotate – something mysteriously missing from Ubuntu and other Gnome-based Linux distributions. Luckily SlideWall fills the void quite nicely while providing you with web-based photos as well. It’s well worth checking out if you enjoy seeing different images throughout the day.
Slidewall was made with Ubuntu’s Unity in mind, but also works in Gnome Shell and Gnome Classic.

Wallpaper Slideshow

The wallpaper tab in SlideWall lets you add as many images as you like to your rotating wallpaper, or remove ones you’ve decided you no longer like.

Zoom settings for the images are also present, if you want control over how your images show up on screen.
The options tab gives you control over how frequently your wallpaper switches, and more:

You can also manually switch the next wallpaper, anytime, by clicking the tray icon (if enabled). “Next” and “Previous” buttons there make the job easy.

Convert 3D videos to 2D format Using Stereoscopic player

12:30 Posted by kkb No comments
                                                                                                                                                                  A first glance...
Stereoscopic Player is a versatile 3D movie player. It allows you to play stereoscopic videos and DVDs (external decoder required) and also allows you to watch live video from a capture device. Since it is based on DirectShow, it can handle almost any media format, for example AVI, MPEG, WMV, ASF and MOV. Videos can be coded in several different stereoscopic formats. Please see the feature list for supported input and output formats.

... and a few more details

Why is it necessary to use a special software for 3D movie playback? The reason is that there are a lots of different ways to watch stereoscopic content as well as different ways to store the content. In the past, it was necessary to encode a stereoscopic movie for each viewing method, for example you had to create an anaglyph file, a interlaced file for use with shutter glasses and a side-by-side for for free-viewing without glasses. Quality was often low. For example, most video codecs don't handle interlaced content well or subsample color information (reducing color resolution to quarter of original resolution), which reduces anaglyph quality significantly.

Stereoscopic Player Screenshot
The solution to above problem is creating just one file and convert it in real-time to the desired output format. The Stereoscopic Player is such a real-time conversion application. Using the player is easy: Load your stereoscopic movie, tell the player how it is encoded and finally select the desired output format (called viewing method). For your convenience, the Stereoscopic Player remembers input settings for each stereoscopic movie in its integrated video library so that you don't have to re-do all the configuration steps again and again. For the most popular 3D-DVDs and 3D video files, Stereoscopic Player can even retrieve the proper settings from a web server. If you are creating content yourself, you can ship your video files together with a Stereoscopic Metafile (*.svi), which also eliminates the need to specify the input format.

What about 2D-3D conversion?

Please note that Stereoscopic Player can not convert 2D content to 3D!  There is no real-time conversion algorithm available which works reasonably well. Computer are not smart enough to understand what's in the foreground and what's in the background yet. Since Stereoscopic Player is a high quality product, no inferior conversion algorithms were incorporated into the player. Stereoscopic Player requires real stereoscopic movies, containing both left and right view.

Dashboard X 2.0 Takes iOS To The Next Level [Cydia]

14:30 Posted by kkb , , No comments

One of the things many users love so much about iOS is the simplicity. When you compare it with other mobile operating systems, iOS has a lot less going on. There are no fancy widgets or any of that, and for some users this is great. For others, just a bunch of icons on a screen is not enough to satisfy them, and that is where jailbreaking comes in. Jailbreaking opens up a new world of customization. For users missing widgets, Dashboard X 2.0 is the single best way to put widgets on an iOS device.
Dashboard X offers a long list of downloadable widgets that should make even the most fussy of customizers happy. There are widgets for almost anything you can think of. Setting them up is easy enough, and it really does take the efficiency of your iPhone or iPad screen to another level. This tweak is useful for someone who wants a little more from their iPhone, or someone switching from Android who misses widgets on their home screen.

Installation and Set Up

All you need to do is search for Dashboard X on Cydia and purchase the tweak. It is available for $1.99. After the install, you will be prompted to respring your device. Once you respring, Dashboard X will be ready to get to work.

Getting Widgets

Out of the box, Dashboard X comes with no widgets installed. If you navigate your iOS device to “Settings,” and scroll down and click “Dashboard X” from the list, you will be able to add new widgets from here.
Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the setting screen and you will see a button labeled “More Widgets.” Click this and you will get two options. The first is Notification Widgets, which are the same widgets you can use in notification center. The second options is Dashboard X Widgets, which are built specifically for Dashboard X. Both work fine, but there are many more to choose from in the Notification Widgets section.

Clicking either of the two options will bring you to Cydia, where you can see the list of available widgets. Click and download one as you would any other Cydia tweak, respring your device, and you will be ready to add it to your screen.

Adding Widgets to your Screen

Dashboard X supports displaying widgets in two different ways. The first, applies them directly to your home screen. The second choice is to use a separate dashboard to display the widgets only when you need to use them.
To add a widget directly to the home screen, tap and hold on any app until they start wiggling. Once your home screen is editable, tap and hold on any blank space, and the list of installed widgets will open. Choose the widget you want to display, and it will appear. You can move it around just like you would any other application installed on your device.
To add a widget to the dashboard, you will need to set up an activator action to open the dashboard or use the default, which is a double tap of the status bar. If you have no other widgets installed, performing your activator action will cause a message to come up telling you that there are no widgets and you can tap “Okay” to add some. If you have widgets and want to add more, you will need to open the dashboard, tap and hold on a blank space until your widgets wiggle and then tap and hold again to open the page to add a widget.

What Kind of Widgets Are There?

We have covered some of the best widgets available in Notification Center, and all of these will work with Dashboard X. Of course, there plenty more not covered there, and these are just some of the ones available.
  • Dashtweet – You can send tweets from your home screen. I cannot fathom a quicker way to share your thoughts with the world.
  • Music Widget – Play, pause and skip songs right from your home screen. Shows album artwork if available. I tested it with Spotify and it worked perfectly including the album art.
  • YTubSearchDaSH – While not the most clever name, this handy widget lets you search YouTube quickly and easily. There is also TwiSearchDaSH for Twitter, NstaSearchDaSH for Instagram, FBSearchDaSH for Facebook and GoogleDaSH for Google.
These widgets, along with the slew of widgets available in the notification center offer a great widget experience on iOS.

Cool,  isn't it ?!  :O

How To Create Your Own Online Proxy Server In Minutes Using Glype

12:30 Posted by kkb No comments

Prerequisites

If we want to make a proxy server there are a few things you need.
  • Web Host
In theory, any webhost will do, if they comply with the other requirements; an old computer in your basement, or even a free online webhost.
  • PHP5 or greater and cURL
Look for this on the website of your webhost. If it’s paid hosting, you can almost count on it. Especially cURL is a feature that’ll be disabled on most free webservers.
  • Permission
That’s right. Some webhosts will explicitly forbid you to create a proxy server (or a chat room, for that matter) in their terms of content. And you can expect them to find out.

1. Download and Install GlypeProxy

GlypeProxy is a free, standalone PHP script. That means it’s lightweight and incredibly easy to configure. You can download it from their website.
Next, upload the files to a sub directory on your webserver. If you see a folder called ‘www’, or called after your domain name (e.g. domain.com) create the sub folder in there. You need to avoid using the word ‘proxy’, because some companies pick up on it. Instead, use ‘web’ or ‘surf’.

There are a few different ways to upload your files. If you already know this, skip to the next paragraph. Here they are arranged from the least to the most effort.
  • Upload and unpack ZIP
Look in the filemanager for an ‘unpack’ or ‘extract’ option. You can then upload it in one take. This is not always supported.
  • FTP access
Use an FTP application to access your webhost, and let it transfer the files while you fetch some more coffee. Most often supported.
  • Manual upload
You really don’t want to do this – are you sure the previous two alternatives are blanked out? Your last resolve will be to manually upload all the files and folder structures. Or start looking for a different host – it might not be such a bad idea.

Any problems? !  feel free to ask :)

Armed! Futuristic Real Time Strategy for Windows Phone 7

19:48 Posted by kkb No comments

Gaming for Windows Phone is an interesting experience. While there are a whole host of great independent titles that don’t have Xbox Live integration, those that do are the ones that tend to be the most popular – for obvious reasons. After all, the ability to top up your Gamerscore while sitting on a train or plane is pretty compelling!
One game that remains fascinating despite the lack of Xbox Live integration, however, is Armed!, a sci-fi themed RTS with three modes of play and an armada of futuristic weaponry.
Armed! is one of the most popular games for Windows Phone, but the question is: why? How can a game that doesn’t offer the sought after Xbox Live features be so popular?

Armed! Real Time Strategy Fun

RTS games are typically turn-based, and Armed is no different. You start with a small budget and some low-grade weapons, and the aim of the game is to build, expand and conquer the enemy who is typically pitted with you at the other side of the map.
real time strategy
With a massive 50 upgrades and attacks that can be used as tactical advantages and 12 unit types to command, the real fun with Armed! is that it offers online game play against other opponents situated around the world as well as a correspondence/delayed multiplayer experience and the standard single-player-vs-AI experience.

Getting into Battle Quickly

Whether you’re an experienced RTS gamer or Armed! is new to you, don’t worry, there are options for everyone. When the game is first launched, you’ll see the Quick Start option, while Single Player games and Multiplayer games can be set up by sliding left. The System menu provides full control over the volume, speed and whether notifications are displayed (you’ll need these for correspondence multiplayer games).
real time strategy windows mobile
In the Quick Start section two options, New Match and Tutorial, can be chosen, offering the opportunity to either go leaping into combat straight away or following the tutorial to get a hang of things.
Once in the game, the pinch gesture allows you to zoom in and out while a single finger can be used to navigate the in-game world. Static hardware (power stations, turrets, factories) can be selected with a single tap, while mobile hardware is only available after building a factory.
The aim of capturing the enemy base can be achieved, but the restrictions of the maps – for instance, a river running through the middle, separating each faction by just a couple of bridges – means that you need to think strategically. Understanding the landscape and the need for survival – as well as that you and the enemy are evenly matched – is the key, much like playing a game of chess.

Is Armed! Really that Good?

While developers hurried to add titles to the Windows Phone Marketplace (making it the fastest platform to reach 10,000 apps early in 2011), Windows Phone 7 isn’t really seen as a gaming device, despite the presence of the best Xbox Live integration you’ll find outside of an Xbox 360 device.
real time strategy windows mobile
Fortunately more and more games are hitting the platform, but typically for what is considered a narrow genre, few of these are real time strategy games. The only thing that comes close is the Xbox Live-enabled Fusion: Sentient, which is a very good alternative that links up with the parent title Fusion: Genesis enabling you to swap Sentients between the games.
Despite the lack of Xbox Live integration, Armed! is easily one of the best games available on Windows Phone.

Are You Fully Armed!?

real time strategy
Developed by Sickhead Games and available for $2.99 or £2.29 in the UK, Armed! should feature on every list of the top Windows Phone games. A version is being prepared for the Windows 8 platform, which will be the first step to multi-platform multiplay.

I personally recommend this game ... FREE version of the is not bad at all .. only problem the free version doesn't support MULTI-PLAYER .  cheers :)
Now that's what we call a game ..
